GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Key words

In Year 1 it is expected that children will read key words on sight, or be able to fluently apply their phonics to read them.  Throughout the year children will also be learning to spell these words.  Some of these words are 'tricky words' that cannot be sounded out (e.g. said) and some of these words require the children to apply their phonics knowledge (sounds). At BIS we also have a list of ‘must correctly spell’ words for each year group which we support the children in learning throughout the year.  The Year 1 words are as follows:

Year 1 Tricky words

Reading

Reading is a very important part of learning which will help your child progress in all areas of the curriculum.  Your child will choose a school book, appropriate for their reading level, to bring home each day.  Please try to hear them read at home every evening, record how they did in their red reading notebook and then return it to school the following day.  Thank you for your continued support with reading.

Phonics

When supporting your child with their reading, you may find it useful to refer to these sounds.  As well as the individual alphabet sounds (e.g. the 'd' sound in 'dog'), your child will also learn these digraphs (sounds with two letters) and trigraphs (sounds with three letters).

Your child will continue to practise the letter formation learnt in Year R.  In Year 1, once the children are confident with forming letters correctly and with the correct orientation, they will begin to look at joining.  Please see below for guidance on letter formation.
