If your child is unwell before coming to school

If your child becomes unwell with symptoms of Coronavirus only, such as a:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

The government’s guidance states that you only need to be displaying ONE of the symptoms before you are required to follow these next steps:

You must keep them off school for 10 days, inform the office of your decision and organise a PCR test. You should phone 119 to organise a test. You need to get the test done as soon as possible.

Should the test result be negative before the 10 days are up, your child can return to school. If the test is positive, you must phone the school immediately with the result.

If your child has any vomiting or diarrhoea, they must be kept off school for 72 hours.  During this period, if your child develops additional symptoms which have been stated above, then please continue to keep your child off school, inform the office and apply for a Coronavirus test.  If your child does NOT develop any additional covid like symptoms, they may return to school after the 72 hours.

Any other illness please inform the school as normal.

If your child becomes unwell with Coronavirus symptoms at school what will happen next?

  • They will be sent home and advised to get a PCR test.
  • Your child will be isolated in our isolation room, and supervised by a member of the office staff while waiting to be collected.
  • Any pupils must be tested if they display symptoms of Coronavirus. You should phone 119 to organise a test. You need to get the test done in the first 5 days of having symptoms.
